Acknowledge that Caregiving Does Affect Your Health
Stress is an extremely powerful force in terms of your health. It can cause problems with your blood pressure, keep you from eating properly, and even affect whether you make poor decisions, such as trying to lift your senior by yourself. All of these factors and more can affect how your health changes and possibly worsens during your time as a family caregiver.
Assess Your Current Health Needs
Look at your current situation carefully. If you have existing health conditions, you need to make sure that those are handled properly. Make an appointment with your doctor if you haven’t been in a while. Figure out where you’re at right now in terms of your health and then look at where you want to be.
Determine Your Plan of Action
When you have a clear picture of where you are and where you want to be in terms of your health, you can start making a plan to get there. Your doctor may have some specific steps you can take in order to get your plan rolling. If you don’t plot out your plan, even in a general sense, you’re going to find it difficult to keep your own health goals in mind. It’s easier to ignore something if you don’t have a guideline.
Stick with the Plan, but Modify it as Needed
Once you’ve got a plan, it’s time to work that plan. But here’s the thing. No plan is perfect right out of the gate. You might find that you have different needs or your goals might change. You might make a plan to change your diet and then find that the diet you chose doesn’t work well for you. Keeping your plan flexible allows you to keep your plan working with your goals instead of against them.
Don’t Give Up
Focusing on your own health and well-being is difficult, especially when you’re a caregiver. That’s because so much of your time and energy goes toward caring for someone else and it might feel like there’s not much left over for you. Keep going and don’t forget that you’re important, too.
Keeping up with your own health issues is one of the more important things for you to do as a caregiver. If you’re not paying attention to your own health, you’re opening yourself up to all sorts of issues now and in the future.
